UN chief visits Gaza, urges probe

Ban said he was 'appalled' after witnessing the aftermath of the attack on the UN complex [EPA]
Ban Ki-moon, the secretary-general of the United Nations, has demanded a "full investigation" into Israel's bombing of a UN compound in Gaza City.

Speaking during an official visit to the Palestinian enclave on Tuesday, he condemned the attack on the UN complex as "outrageous" and "totally unacceptable".

"It is particularly significant for a secretary-general of the UN to stand in front of this bomb site of the UN compound," he said."I am just appalled and not able to describe how I am feeling having seen this ... it's an outrageous and totally unacceptable attack against the UN. I have protested many times, and I protest again in the strongest terms."

Ban called for a "full investigation" into the incident to make those responsible for the attack "accountable".

He also announced he was sending a high-level delegation to oversee humanitarian support for Gazans and assist with the rebuilding effort following Israel's three-week offensive.

Ban is the highest-ranking official to visit Gaza since Israel and Hamas declared separate, unilateral ceasefires on Sunday.

'Shocking' devastation
Ban stressed "the UN and the international community will support and help you [Gazans] to overcome" the devastation, which he described as "shocking and alarming".

While Ban reiterated his condemnation of Israel's "excessive use of force", he was careful to underline that he believes rocket attacks on Israel by Gazan fighters are also "unacceptable".

Unearthing Gaza's destruction
Israel's scorched earth tactics

Israel had said the aim of its operations in Gaza was to cripple Hamas's ability to launch rockets into the south of the country.

Ban urged Palestinians factions to unite to allow the international community, including the UN, to help broker a lasting peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians.

However, while offering to do "all [he] can as secretary-general of the UN to help in this time of need", Ban is not expected to meet Hamas officials during this visit.

Ayman Mohyeldin, Al Jazeera's correspondent in Gaza, said because much of the international community, including the US and the European Union, regard Hamas as a "terrorist organisation", it would be political difficult for the UN chief to hold direct talks with Hamas officials.
Hamas won parliamentary elections in 2006 which were internationally recognised as being both fair and free.
Rebuilding Gaza's devastated infrastructure is expected to cost billions of US dollars.
Without supplies
John Holmes, the UN humanitarian chief, says hundreds of millions of dollars in emergency aid supplies will be needed for the people of Gaza.
Although water supplies were restored to many Gazan homes as of Sunday, 400,000 were still without running water, Holmes said.
GAZA TOLL
At least 1,300 people killed, including more than 400 children and more than 100 women
At least 5,300 Palestinians injured, including nearly 1,900 children and 800 women At least 100,000 people forced from their homes At least 13 Israelis killed, including three civilians
Electricity in Gaza is available for less than half the day and around 100,000 people have been left homeless by the war.
Scores of bodies have been discovered in the rubble of destroyed buildings since both sides declared unilateral ceasefires on Sunday.
Palestinians returning to their neighbourhoods have begun to unearth the true scale of destruction.
Mohyeldin reported that the World Health Organisation had issued a warning of an outbreak of disease as weeks-old bodies remain unburied and sewage continues to flow in many areas because of the destruction of Gaza's infrastructure.
The deposed Hamas-led government in Gaza estimates that more than 5,000 buildings were completely destroyed and another 20,000 damaged or partially destroyed in the fighting.
Despite the three-week Israeli onslaught that killed more than 1,300 Palestinians and destroyed thousands of buildings, Hamas and other Palestinian factions have claimed victory in the fighting.
Following his visit to Gaza, the UN chief also visited the southern Israeli town of Sderot - one of the main targets for Palestinian rocket-launching squads based in Gaza.
Ban said he was "totally committed to Israel securing its rightful place as a nation within secure and recognised borders" and called for the current ceasefires to be turned into a durable truce "respected fully by all parties concerned".

Geran kampung baru, Jus Soli dan kemahiran berbohong Umno

Ahmad Tajdid
Mon Jan 19, 09 3:07:53 pm MYT

What Hollywood star re-action

Al Bakri fil Muar,
16 Jan 2009

Saya bukanlah peminat pelakon-pelakon Hollywood cuma disini ingin paparkan beberapa kenyataan yang mereka buat mengenai Palestin. Ada sahabat yang hantar.

Neutral dan yang tidak pro Israel:

Sean Connery

Saya malu menjadi rakyat Amerika.

George Clooney
Sejarah akan melihat Bush, Sharon, Blair and Rice adalah nama-nama perosak [keamanan].

Dustin Hoffman
"Kemanusiaan dinafikan kewujudannya apabila negara Israel diwujudkan"

Ralph Fiennes

Saya berharap Israel musnahkan kesemua mereka"

Ulasan:

Umat Islam terutama bangsa Arab dihina begitu sekali, masih lagi berpecah belah.

Shoot Then Ask, Israeli Soldiers Told

CAIRO — Israeli occupation forces returning for a break from the fighting in the Gaza Strip are revealing ruthless tactics they are being ordered to follow. "We are treating everything as hostile right now," Alon, an army lieutenant, told the Times on Wednesday, 14 January.
When his unit ventures into any alleyway in the densely-populated Jabalya refugee camp in northern Gaza, they opened fire without hesitation.
"We were told not to take chances — to shoot rather than ask questions," says Alon, citing his orders.
Since the start of Israel's onslaught, over 1,013 people, nearly half of them civilians, have been killed in countless aerial bombardments and 10 days of heavy fighting.
No less than 315 children and 100 women are among the dead, according to Gaza medics.
Around 4,700 people have been wounded, hundreds critically, in Israel's largest-ever offensive in the heavily-populated coastal territory.
With the borders sealed, there was no place of safety for civilians to flee the fighting, meaning they were forced to live in fear and terror.
Nine Israeli rights groups stressed Wednesday that the Gaza offensive has caused unprecedented suffering to civilian residents who are being subjected to "extreme humanitarian distress."
"The level of harm to the civilian population is unprecedented," they wrote in a joint open letter to Defense Minister Ehud Barak.
They accused the army of "making wanton use of lethal force which has to date caused the deaths of hundreds of uninvolved civilians."
"This kind of fighting constitutes a blatant violation of the laws of warfare and raises the suspicion... of the commission of war crimes."
Destruction
Lieutenant-Colonel Yehuda said it was standard practice for Israeli troops to enter buildings with bursts of shooting.
"In one case the building started burning but we managed to clear out our men in time."
Even the Israeli soldiers are shocked by the scale of destruction they are leaving behind.
"It doesn’t look like we’ve been there a few weeks — it looks destroyed, demolished, like we were bombing it for years," said Alon.
"You can’t imagine what damage we have done."
Hundreds of homes, government buildings, schools, hospitals and mosques have been razed to the ground in air, sea and ground attacks.
"I’m not a newcomer in the army. Both my brothers served in combat units that saw action in Gaza," Alon told the Times.
"And I can say that this is the most aggressive line that we have ever taken towards fighting the Palestinians.
"As you say in English, the gloves were off."
White Phosphorus
Israeli soldiers confirmed what their army is vehemently denying; using white phosphor shells in bombing Gaza targets.
"We’ve been using it responsibly…it’s been around the whole time," one soldier told the Times.
The Israeli army on Monday insisted all weapons being used in its Gaza war were within the bounds of international law.
Medics in Gaza say they have treated more than 50 people suffering burns caused by controversial white phosphorus shells, a toxic chemical agent which burns away human flesh to the bone.
Early this week, Human Rights Watch accused Israel of using white-phosphorus in bombing the densely-populated Gaza Strip.
Under international law, white phosphorus is banned for use against civilians, but is permitted if used for creating a smokescreen.
Two Norwegians who returned from Gaza on Monday, January 12, also accused Israel of using Gaza as a testing ground for a new extremely nasty type of explosive.
They had seen clear signs, including very brutal amputations without shrapnel injuries, that DIME explosives, a new experimental kind of weapon, were being used in Gaza.

Ismail Haniyeh open letter to the world.

CAIRO — Ismail Haniyeh, the sacked premier of the Palestinian national unity government and the de facto premier of Gaza, insists that Israel's onslaught against the heavily-populated territory is politically-motivated. "Despite its frantic efforts to conceal it, the root cause of Israel's criminal war on Gaza is the elections of January 2006, which saw Hamas win by a substantial majority," Haniyeh wrote in an open letter addressed to the people of the West and published in The Independent on Thursday, January 15.

"What occurred next was that Israel alongside the US and the European Union joined forces in an attempt to quash the democratic will of the Palestinian people," he stressed.

"They set about reversing the decision first by obstructing the formation of a national unity government and then by making a living hell for the Palestinian people through economic strangulation.

"The abject failure of all these machinations finally led to this vicious war."
He refuted Israeli claims that the military offensive aims at ending rocket attacks.
"Palestinians are appalled that the members of the European Union do not view this obscene siege as a form of aggression.

"Despite the overwhelming evidence, they shamelessly assert that Hamas brought this catastrophe upon the Palestinian people because it did not renew the truce," said Haniyeh.
"Yet we ask, did Israel honor the terms of the ceasefire mediated by Egypt in June? It did not. The agreement stipulated a lifting of the siege and an end to attacks in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

"Despite our full compliance, the Israelis persisted in murdering Palestinians in Gaza as well as the West Bank during what became known as the year of the Annapolis peace."
Haniyeh criticized world silence to the killing of more than 1030 Palestinians, half of them women and children, in 20 days and Israel's use of banned weapons.

"How many more international treaties and conventions must Zionist Israel breach before it is held accountable?

There is not a capital in the world today where free and decent people are not outraged by this brutal oppression. Neither Palestine nor the world would be the same after these crimes."

Lagu untuk Gaza

WE WILL NOT GO DOWN (Song for Gaza)
(Composed by Michael Heart)
Copyright 2009

A blinding flash of white light
Lit up the sky over Gaza tonight
People running for cover
Not knowing whether they’re dead or alive
They came with their tanks and their planes
With ravaging fiery flames
And nothing remains Just a voice rising up in the smoky haze
We will not go down

In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
We will not go down

In Gaza tonight Women and children alike
Murdered and massacred night after night
While the so-called leaders of countries afar
Debated on who’s wrong or right
But their powerless words were in vain
And the bombs fell down like acid rain
But through the tears and the blood and the pain
You can still hear that voice through the smoky haze
We will not go down

In the night, without a fight
You can burn up our mosques and our homes and our schools
But our spirit will never die
We will not go down In Gaza tonight.

- azm

Saudi Internet campaign to boycott US firms

Saudi Internet campaign to boycott US firms over Israeli assault on Gaza gathers momentum.

RIYADH - An Internet campaign in Saudi Arabia for a boycott of US businesses over Washington's support of the Israeli assault on Gaza gathered force Monday as a new website tied to a conservative cleric promoted the movement.

For days the calls to stop patronizing popular US brands like McDonalds, Pepsi, Burger King, Kentucky Fried Chicken and Chili's have spread through viral emails and SMS messages, with no apparent sponsor or backer of the campaign. Some singled out Starbucks and cigarette maker Philip Morris for allegedly supporting Israel, and called on Saudi consumers to stop buying their products.

"If you cannot donate money for Gaza, at least stop buying the products of these brands," said one email."

On Sunday a new website dedicated to promoting the boycott was launched with the support of prominent cleric Sheikh Awad al-Qarni, who was recently arrested for calling for attacks on Israelis everywhere after it launched its war on Gaza. The website asked people to stay away from US brands until Israel stops its attacks and opens all border crossings for the territory."Let our enemy see we can teach them a hard lesson," it said. Many Saudis said they had received the emails and text messages about the boycott.

Teacher Said al-Qahtani said he was backing the campaign "to change US bias toward Israel and against the Arabs."A student at King Saud University who did not want to be identified said he and his friends stopped eating their lunches at the campus McDonalds."This boycott is popular among university students," he said."We have seen a downturn," one Starbucks manager said, noting that the group has experienced such actions before, like when the United States invaded Iraq in 2003.

Concerned about talk of a boycott, on January 5 the Starbucks headquarters in the United States issued a statement denying it was supporting Israel in the conflict."Starbucks is a non-political organization and does not support political causes. Further, the political preferences of a Starbucks partner at any level have absolutely no bearing on Starbucks company policies," it said. Many Saudis are angry about Israel's two-week-old campaign against Gaza, which has left nearly 900 Palestinians dead, but are frustrated over the few outlets available to express their feelings.

Mauritania to cut ties with Israel

Posted: 10-01-2009 , 19:30 GMT
Mauritania's decision to recall its ambassador to Tel Aviv earlier this week marked the "first step" to cutting ties with the Jewish state, an adviser to the country's military junta said on Saturday. "Mauritania's decision to recall its ambassador in Israel is a first step towards severing ties with this aggressive entity," said Cheikh Ben Horma Ould Ben Babana, adviser to the president of Mauritania's ruling High Council of State.

"This relationship between Mauritania and the Israeli entity disturbs and embarrasses Mauritanians," Ben Babana told reporters in Cairo, according to Reuters. Mauritania said on Monday it had recalled its ambassador for consultations, days after protesters took to the streets of the capital Nouakchott to demand the country cut diplomatic ties with Israel over its military offensive in the Gaza Strip.

Ties between Israel and Mauritania were the legacy of a former regime and had been established for "personal reasons", Ben Babana said.

Jordan Threatens to Reconsider Ties With Israel
January 06, 2009 09:00 AM ET Larry Derfner Permanent Link Print
With large, angry anti-Israeli demonstrations putting pressure on moderate Arab states, Jordan, one of two Arab countries that have diplomatic relations with Israel (Egypt being the other), now says it is "reconsidering" those ties. Al Jazeera reports:
Jordan's prime minister has said his country may review its diplomatic ties with Israel in the wake of the offensive in Gaza.
"Jordan will look into all options, including reconsidering relations with Israel," Nader Dahabi told legislators on Sunday.
"There is no way we would remain silent when this threat affects the security of the entire region."
Turkey, a moderate Muslim country that Israel considers a vital regional ally and military partner, has likewise been compelled by popular opinion to takes sides against Israel. Ha'aretz reports:
Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan on Monday accused Israel of committing "inhuman" acts in Gaza that would cause it to self-destruct. In an interview with Al Jazeera television network, the Turkish prime minister said Israel hurt its relations with Turkey by attacking Gaza, and will be punished. In the wake of his visit to the Middle East on Monday, Erdogan voiced his support of Hamas and said Turkey would act as a mediator between the Islamist organization and the United Nations Security Council.
West Bank leadership softening criticism of HamasHamas's rival, the U.S.-backed Palestinian Authority that rules the West Bank, has begun to mute its public criticism of Gaza's radical leadership. Ghassan Khatib, a former PA minister, writes in the joint Israeli/Palestinian news site bitterlemons.org that this could hasten steps toward a merger between the PA and Hamas:
The Israeli attack has increased public sympathy and support for Hamas because it is the target of these attacks and because it is trying to fight back. The Palestinian Authority in Ramallah, meanwhile, finds itself in an awkward and difficult position.
For one thing, it has been marginalized and has been the target of criticism while being compared unfavorably with the role and position of Hamas in Gaza. This has led Fateh spokespeople and leaders to change their tone from trying to hint at Hamas responsibility for the suffering of Gazans to a more reasonable and rational tone, exemplified by President Mahmoud Abbas, who, during a meeting of the PLO's Executive Committee, suggested that the time is right for coordination between the different factions and invited all factions, including Hamas, to address this issue.
This change in tone could result in some positive momentum in the dialogue among the Palestinian factions that are under growing pressure from the public to reconcile.

The little stripe at the bottom of Gaza, Palestine that everyone forgets.

Location: Rafah, Gaza Strip, Palestine

The US House of Representatives has voted to endorse a resolution backing Israel in its offensive in Gaza, in which at least 780 Palestinians have been killed. The body passed Friday's resolution "recognising Israel's right to defend itself against attacks from Gaza"WTF?
Is anyone else looking at this and thinking the world has gone mad?Ok...so here is the deal. The current invasion has nothing to do with Israel's right to defend itself from Hamas. The Occupation of Palestine pre dates Hamas as an organisation. This problem was here BEFORE HAMAS EXISTED.The problem is that for Israel to remain Jewish this cannot be one country (we'd be happy for that but Israel has to be majority Jewish so no can do).

So...why not two countries (oh, yeah, did I menion we are not a sovereign nation just a collection of refugees awaiting a final outcome (I would have said final solution but that's bad taste). And here is the rub. For Israel to survive with or without the massive US backing it needs to continue its exports and businesses which are almost TOTALY reliant on resources found in the West Bank (and apparently some here like gas).

That's right....they got most of the land but we got all of the resources. So...for them to survive we can't. And they bigger and badder so it does not look so good.I accept that. In battle there is winner and loser....but please just tell the truth. You destroy us because you need to in order to survive. Tell the world that and stop hiding behind the lies and portraying yourselves as the victims.

Historically yes and we cry for your past but really...now....you are the destroyers....so afraid are you of being wiped out you ignore your pain and inflict suffering on us to survive.65 year of this shit is enough please so you might as well kill us all. The world will believe your lies that you just wiped out a 'den of terrorists' not a prison full of families but beware....history may judge you differently and the world anger may make your fears a self fulflling prophecy.Masalaam.

UN Resolutions Targeting Israel and the Palestinians

Israel is the target of at least 65 UN Resolutions and the Palestinians are the target of none.

Aside from the core issues—refugees, Jerusalem, borders—the major themes reflected in the U.N. resolutions against Israel over the years are its unlawful attacks on its neighbors; its violations of the human rights of the Palestinians, including deportations, demolitions of homes and other collective punishments; its confiscation of Palestinian land; its establishment of illegal settlements; and its refusal to abide by the U.N. Charter and the 1949 Fourth Geneva Convention Relative to the Protection of Civilian Persons in Time of War.

Cerita tentang menteri jaga harga minyak di Malaysia

Al Bakri fil Muar,
11 Jan 2009

Saya rasa agak keliru sikit, "cukai".

Mungkin harga petril dikira macam ini kot. [Contoh kira]
= harga minyak dunia + cukai
= RM1.80 seliter

Kesimpulannya, kalau wang keluar dari perbendeharaan disebut subsidi tapi jika wang dikeluarkan oleh rakyat disebut cukai.

Pesanan al-Bakri, (pinjam kata-kata Nabil) buat rakyat semua " lu fikirlah sendiri"

BN/UMNO/MCA/MIC - tradisi membelit rakyat.

Palestine: Teruskan memboikot produk Amerika/Israel

Al-Bakri fil Muar
11 Jan 2009

Diwaktu rakyat Palestin menderita diserang Israel, rakyat Malaysia diminta memboikot produk Amerika sekutu kuat Israel.

Teruskan memboikot produk Amerika, ingat penderitaan rakyat Palestine.

Sara Lee:About
Investments:25% interest in Delta Galil. JV with Nilit for production of POY yarns (9/96) Owns 100% of Sara Lee International.

Five Palestinian sisters were fast asleep when Isreal bomb...

Israel's target was the mosque next door. But the rocket attack claimed the lives of innocent children .

Donald Macintyre and Said Ghazali
The IndependentDecember 30, 2008

'You will be martyrs': These were the words spoken by the surviving sister as her five siblings, Jawaher, four, Dina, eight, Samar, 12, Ikram, 15 and Tahrir, 17, lay dying beneath the rubble of their home; PHOTO: Getty

The five Palestinian sisters were fast asleep when a night-time Israeli airstrike hit the next-door mosque in Gaza. One of the walls collapsed on to their small asbestos-roofed home and they were all killed in their beds. The eldest sister, Tahrir, was 17 years old, the youngest, Jawaher, just four.

"They grow up day after day and night after night. Within a second, I have lost them," the girls' father, Anwar Balousha, said yesterday. The 37-year-old, along with another three of his children, was himself injured in the attack on the densely populated Jabalya refugee camp.

The funerals of the sisters – Tahrir, 17; Ikram, 15; Samar, 12; Dina eight; and Jawaher, four – were attended by family members and thousands of mourners. But with space running out in the cemetery, the five girls had to be buried in just three graves, one for the eldest and the others forced to share.

Mr Balousha wept down the phone, saying he felt "how a father who lost his five daughters would feel". With recorded readings from the Koran audible in the background, along with occasional explosions in the distance, he added: "It is the will of Allah. We are believers in God."

Amid the pile of rubble that was the Balousha home yesterday, three torn blankets could be seen poking out from the ruins along with a painted blue iron, a broken brown cupboard and a baby's bed.

The Israeli military said it had targeted the next-door mosque because it was a "known gathering place" of Hamas adherents. It said four gunmen were inside it at the time of the attack. The mosque was named Imad Akel after the former leader of the Hamas military wing.

As Israeli strikes continued, the uncle of the dead sisters said the family had been innocent victims. "We are not those who are firing rockets against Israel," Ibrahim Balousha said. "We are just people, human beings and not animals."

The Balousha family had moved out of their house when the Israeli bombing started on Saturday but they had decided to return "to meet their fate" in the words of the dead girls' uncle. He said that three missiles had been used in the airstrike at around 11.20pm on Sunday night and that hundreds of neighbours had arrived to help in the wake of the carnage.

After the funeral, 16-year-old Iman, who was briefly buried in the rubble of the family home but survived, described her unlucky siblings' dying moments. "I told my sisters, you will be martyrs, this is the end."

Her grieving uncle said that Hamas had taken advantage of the funeral to chant slogans including "Vengeance, Vengeance". Shouts of "Bomb Tel Aviv" were also heard. But Ibrahim Balousha said he had given the militant group short shrift. "I told them, this is a funeral and not a rally."

Times were already tough for the family of refugees even before the latest tragedy. The girls' father is unemployed for 11 months of the year, picking up work selling Ka'ak bread around Ramadan. The family depend on food rations from the United Nations Relief and Works Agency and a $40 (£27.50) monthly handout. "The story is almost the same for decades," Ibrahim Balousha said: "Intifada and miseries, poverty and catastrophes."

UNRWA spokesman Christopher Gunness said: "The killing of these young girls is another tragic illustration that this bombardment is exacting a terrible price on innocent civilians. As with the killing of UNRWA students [on Saturday] we hope there will be a thorough and impartial and transparent investigation.

"Most important of all there has to be accountability. We need to know if international law was violated and if so, by whom," he added.

The UN yesterday issued a "conservative" estimate of the number of civilians killed in three days of unprecedentedly fierce aerial bombardment, putting the death toll at 62. It is a deliberately conservative estimate because it excludes all men in the Gaza City area to ensure that it does not accidentally include uniformed personnel.

The Palestinian Centre of Human Rights said that "most" of the more than 300 casualties were civilian but their tally includes Hamas policemen. It also said some bodies had still to be identified because they were so badly disfigured and that its field officers – who aim to chart every Palestinian casualty – are facing "extreme difficulties in visiting some areas, particularly those under multiple bombardment.

The Israeli military insists that it is doing its utmost to prevent civilian casualties but repeatedly points out that Hamas regularly and "cynically and specifically" uses locations in heavily built-up areas.
